UPS for cameras
Providing an alternative power source is of primary importance when installing a video surveillance system.
With a UPS for cameras we can in fact guarantee that the surveillance system continues to record even if someone manages to tamper with the power system.
It is equally important to ensure that the system is not subject to voltage fluctuations.
In fact, we are talking about electronic components that are particularly sensitive to network disturbances and, even in the face of their considerable cost, we must preserve their duration over time.
A UPS for cameras can protect us from all these risks: we just have to figure out which UPS is right for us!
Why get a UPS for video surveillance?
There are mainly two reasons why it is essential to integrate a UPS within our video surveillance system.
First of all, an uninterruptible power supply for cameras allows us to keep the system operational even in the absence of current. It is therefore an additional safety measure that will certainly help us sleep more peacefully.
Secondly, with the right UPS we can protect our equipment from sudden shutdowns and consequent restarts, considerably lengthening the average life of the system.
To obtain all this, the main parameters to consider when choosing a UPS for cameras are likewise two: the sizing and the possibility of acting as a voltage stabilizer.
Sizing
The term "sizing" means the phase in which we define the power that the UPS must have in order to correctly support all the connected devices.
Most surveillance systems have a rather low power consumption. This means that even with a low-power UPS, we will be able to effectively counter a blackout, while guaranteeing a good level of autonomy.
In fact, a typical 4-channel video surveillance system with an analogue DVR consumes around 70 Watts, so an 850 VA Epyc UPS will be sufficient to guarantee us about half an hour of autonomy in the event of a power failure.
For those who want greater autonomy, it will be enough to opt for a more powerful UPS, which will consequently be equipped with batteries with greater capacity.
Voltage stabilizer
Inside a modern video surveillance system there are three elements that are particularly sensitive to network disturbances:
- The cameras, which primarily allow us to acquire video images
- Hard disks, which guarantee data writing and recording operations
- LEDs, now indispensable for recording images at night or in low light conditions
In the absence of an absolutely stable voltage, each of these components risks affecting the correct functioning of our video surveillance system and, in the worst case, irreparably failing.
To avoid this type of risk, and the costly consequences that could derive from it, it is essential to have a Line Interactive UPS as, thanks to the presence of the AVR circuit, it is able to constantly stabilize the output voltage by keeping it within of an optimal range for powering the connected peripherals.
Ups for cameras: which one to choose?
Given the requirements just illustrated, the Epyc UPS models that we would like to recommend to anyone who needs to secure their video surveillance system are the TETRYS and NEON series UPSs.
These models in particular are both small, silent, equipped with AVR stabilizer and with a power of at least 850 VA.
If, on the other hand, you have a particularly elaborate system, with a high number of cameras, or if you are in any case interested in guaranteeing the maximum level of autonomy, then we advise you to opt for the QUANTUM series which is also available in the 2200 VA version, equipped with two 9 Ah batteries.
