Best UPS for MAC

Protecting your peripherals from the risks associated with the power supply is certainly an excellent precaution, increasingly widespread among the most varied types of user.

And if there is someone who cares even more about the "health" of their devices, it is probably precisely those who own a Mac computer.
We are well aware that Apple users often have a strong attachment to their loyal apple-computers!

So let's find out what are the criteria to take into consideration to identify the best UPS for Mac.

Selection criteria

As with gaming PCs and all other high-end computers, Macs are also equipped with power supplies with active PFC technology.
Precisely this aspect represents the main discriminating factor to guide us in choosing the most appropriate UPS.

Compatibility with active PFC

To support peripherals of this type, and in particular to avoid damage related to the strong inrush currents that characterize their operation, the UPS for Mac must have a specific function.
There are two ways to go:

UPS with pure sine wave output
This is the ideal solution, in which the UPS, positioned between the electrical system and the utilities, is able to deliver a current that exactly reproduces the sinusoidal trend typical of the distribution network.
The system is therefore perfectly compatible with the Mac computer, which is powered correctly if not even better than when it is connected directly to the power outlet.

UPS with PWM technology (Pulse Width Modulation)
Thanks to this feature, the UPS, while not generating a pure sine wave, is absolutely compatible with APFC power supplies as the wave produced at the output is modulated in amplitude, frequency and speed if necessary.
The UPS is thus able to effectively adapt to load situations with highly variable consumption, typical of Mac power supplies.

Power

A significant difference between Macs and gaming PCs is related to absorption.

Although these are high-performance devices, the consumption of Mac computers is relatively low, the result of particular care in optimizing the internal components of the entire system.
For example, a 27” iMac (2020) has a maximum declared consumption of 295 Watts, while a 24” iMac (2024) does not exceed the 100 Watt threshold.

To protect your Mac it is therefore not strictly necessary to have a UPS with a very high rated power.
