UPS for home
Our home, as we know, becomes smarter every day.
The number of devices connected to the Internet continues to increase, including computers, notebooks, tablets, TVs and game consoles. Not to mention the latest smart devices such as Google Home, Alexa and the various peripherals related to home automation.
We can now define our homes as "dependent on connectivity", and it is therefore our task to take best care of this new digital addiction.
But how to do it?
Well, it's simple: equipping ourselves with the right UPS for home!
How to choose the best UPS for home?
Maybe it will make you turn up your nose a little, but the right answer is: it depends!
Precisely because of the multitude of electronic devices that now populate our homes, even very different from each other, it is not possible to provide a universal answer to those looking for the best UPS for their home.
In fact, there is no perfect UPS for the home, just as there is no UPS that is not a priori suitable for use in the home.
We can imagine our home as a set of distinct locations, and for each of them there are specific criteria to follow in order to choose the most appropriate UPS each time.
First, we advise you to read our buying guide, where you can find lots of useful information of a general nature on UPSs, after which we have prepared some specific insights on the most common domestic application areas below.
Are you ready?
OK: let's go!
Tv station
Present in almost all living rooms of the house, this station typically includes a TV (or Smart TV) flanked as appropriate by other electronic devices, such as modems, routers or decoders.
These are typically lowenergy consumption peripherals, which do not require a UPS with particularly complex technology.
If your goal is to protect yourself from sudden changes in voltage, the choice can therefore fall on an uninterruptible power supply with medium-low nominal power, equipped with a sufficient number of output sockets to connect all the appliances.
The Epyc models NEON, ION and TETRYS series meet these requirements.
However, if your intent is also to guarantee you a high autonomy, perhaps because you want to be sure you don't miss even a minute of your favorite TV series, then we advise you to opt for a UPS equipped with a medium-high capacity double battery (7 or 9 Ah).
In this case, the most suitable UPS for the home is the Epyc QUANTUM model.
A separate mention should instead be made for video game consoles.
These devices may in fact require a particular UPS technology, so we invite you to read our dedicated in-depth analysis here.

Pc station and Smart Working
It is now customary to find at least one desktop computer in our homes, especially with the introduction of Smart Working and Distance Learning methods following the 2020 pandemic.
In fact, working from home or following lessons remotely requires well-equipped workstations (computers, monitors, headphones, printers…) and it is easy to understand how essential it is to guarantee continuity of power to all connected devices.
You certainly cannot allow a blackout to interrupt a meeting, make you miss a lesson or even an exam!
Also in this case it will be essential to equip yourself with a special domestic UPS.
This type of workstation can include various accessory devices, but what cannot be missing, and which is decisive for choosing the correct UPS, is the computer itself.
Consumption in Watts can vary significantly depending on the PC model but, also considering the other devices present, we recommend that you first of all choose a UPS with a medium/high nominal power.
The other essential element in these cases is certainly the autonomy guaranteed by the UPS, which must be high enough to allow you to overcome even blackouts that last for several minutes.
Our choice therefore falls on UPS models of at least 1500 VA that are equipped with two internal 9 Ah batteries.
The Epyc QUANTUM and Epyc NYTRO series meet these requirements.
The latter in particular represents the most correct solution for those who use a Mac computer or a PC with an active PFC power supply.

HI-FI and home theatre audio systems
Hi-Fi systems, as well as soundbars and Home Theater systems to be connected to the TV, are delicate devices, often very expensive, which can be particularly sensitive to blackouts and sudden changes in voltage.
To preserve this type of peripherals from potential damage caused by electrical disturbances, it is necessary to use a special UPS with pure sine wave technology, which is able to supply current of the same quality, if not even superior, to that supplied directly by the home electrical network.
Moreover, with this type of UPS, the risk of hum that can be generated by the typical harmonics of a wave that is not perfectly sinusoidal is eliminated.
For your audio devices we therefore recommend the Epyc NYTRO model.
Household appliances
There is another category of electrical devices that you may want to protect inside your home: we are talking about the so-called large appliances, such as the refrigerator, freezer, oven or washing machine.
If you're wondering if it's possible to use a UPS with these devices, the answer is "yes".
However, our advice is to use the UPS only to prevent potential failures or breakages linked to a sudden power cut, while it is not very useful if you want to guarantee the functioning of your appliances during prolonged blackouts.
In this case, you should always wait for the power to be restored by the electricity company.
Large household appliances are rather delicate systems, characterized by the presence of a motor and/or a compressor, which makes them very sensitive to sudden changes in voltage and strong inrush currents.
Given their particular architecture, these devices therefore require only a pure sine wave output UPS or, even better, an Online UPS.
The latter are in fact the most appropriate UPSs to be connected to large household appliances due to their better ability to handle strong inrush currents, and due to the fact that, thanks to double conversion technology, the voltage is constantly generated by the inverter, and therefore always stable.
At the moment there are no Online UPS within the Epyc range.
If you prefer a pure sine wave UPS Line Interactive, then you can choose the Epyc NYTRO model.
